Description
These Baked ‘Honey’ Mustard Tofu Tenders are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and coated in a sweet and tangy vegan honey mustard sauce. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or meatless main dish.
Ingredients
- 450 g extra firm tofu, cut into 1-inch strips
- 1–2 tablespoons olive oil or neutral oil
- Batter:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 3/4 cup water (plus 1 tablespoon if needed)
- Coating:
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- Honey Mustard Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons neutral oil
- 6 tablespoons agave syrup or maple syrup
- 1/4 cup yellow or Dijon mustard
- Pinch of salt
- Dash of black pepper
Instructions
- Mix all the honey mustard sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Press the tofu for 10 minutes, then slice it into 1-inch strips.
- Whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, paprika, and water until a smooth batter forms.
- Place the panko breadcrumbs in a separate bowl.
- Dip each tofu strip into the batter, then coat thoroughly with the breadcrumbs.
- Arrange the coated tofu on a lightly oiled, parchment-lined baking tray and brush or spray the tops with oil.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
- Brush or dip each tender in the honey mustard sauce.
- Return to the oven and bake for another 5–8 minutes until the sauce is absorbed.
- Serve hot with extra honey mustard sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Pressing the tofu helps create the best texture.
- Use maple syrup or agave for a completely vegan sauce.
- Best enjoyed fresh while crispy.
