Description

Ground General Tso’s Chicken is a quick and flavorful twist on classic takeout. Ground chicken is cooked with crunchy water chestnuts, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes, then coated in a sweet, tangy, and slightly spicy General Tso’s sauce. Ready in just 20 minutes, this easy dinner is perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 8 ounces canned water chestnuts, diced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken and diced water chestnuts.
  2. Cook the chicken until a good crust forms before breaking it apart. Continue cooking while breaking it apart with a spatula for another 2–3 minutes, until fully cooked.
  3. Add the minced ginger, garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes. Cook for about 10 seconds, stirring constantly.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the rice vinegar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, water, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
  5. Pour the General Tso’s sauce into the pan with the chicken and bring it to a boil.
  6. Cook for a few seconds, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice or your favorite Asian-inspired side dishes.

Notes

  • Let the ground chicken develop a good crust before breaking it apart for better flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of crushed red pepper flakes to make the dish more or less spicy.
  • Whisk the cornstarch thoroughly into the sauce ingredients before adding it to the pan to prevent lumps.
  • Serve immediately once the sauce thickens for the best texture.
