Turkish Cabbage Stew is a comforting one-pot meal made with seasoned ground beef, tender cabbage, tomato paste, and warm Mediterranean spices. This hearty stew is packed with flavor, easy to prepare, and perfect for cozy family dinners.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large red onion, very finely chopped
- 1 pound ground beef or lamb
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 tablespoon sweet paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried coriander
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 medium cabbage, cored and roughly chopped
- 2 cups beef broth
- Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-5 minutes until softened.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- Stir in the tomato paste, red pepper flakes, paprika, cumin, coriander, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute.
- Add the chopped cabbage and beef broth.
- Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
Notes
- Green or white cabbage both work well for this recipe.
- Brown the beef well for the best flavor.
- Don’t add too much broth, as the cabbage releases liquid while cooking.
- Serve with crusty bread or steamed rice if desired.
